Tim and I went to George's Island the other day. What an awesome place. We took a 30 minute ferry ride out to the island and walked around what used to be Fort Warren. This is a huge fort, built in the late 1700's, that was made to protect the harbor.
It was fantastic. We went into an ammunition magazine which, because of the vaulted ceiling, had incredible acoustics. Tim asked me to sing so I sang a few songs. The noise traveled well beyond the room where we were. A little girl heard me singing and came in to see what she was certain was a ghost. She shined her little flashlight right in my face and said "was that you that I heard singing?" We ended up spending the remainder of the day with 5 year old Emma and her dad.
What an adorable little girl. She was so quick to open up to me. Within an hour she was sitting on my lap and getting piggy-back rides. I think because she associated me with singing, she had me sing to her almost the entire time. I am pretty sure I sang Be Still My Soul and "the spider web song" about 15 times each. She would just rest her sweet little head on my shoulder and listen so intently to the words. She sang us a song too... she sang a mellow-- almost depressing song from The Nightmare Before Christmas. About halfway through she stopped and said "I'm trying not to cry." It was the cutest thing I've ever heard. Emma also has quite the imagination... at one point she said to me "Oh... I wish I could fly. I used to be able to fly, but my powers were taken away by bad guys." She then went on to tell me about specific instances when her ability to fly came in handy. She is definitely one of the friendliest, sweetest, and most adorable little 5 year olds I have ever met. The whole day, while I was busy singing, skipping, galloping, and climbing, Tim was talking to her dad. It was a great opportunity for him to share the Gospel. They talked about some key principles that struck the right chords. I think a good seed was planted that day. I love how the Lord places people in our path who we can help and can help us. He knows exactly when, where and how. It is amazing.
